Lake Torneträsk
Sweden, Norrbotten County

Lake Torneträsk is a significant geographical feature located in the Scandinavian Mountains in the northern part of Sweden, within the Kiruna Municipality of Lapland. It is one of the largest lakes in Sweden, with a surface area of approximately 330 square kilometers and a length of about 70 kilometers. The lake lies at an altitude of 341 meters above sea level and reaches a maximum depth of 168 meters, making it one of the deepest lakes in the country. Situated entirely within the Arctic Circle, Lake Torneträsk is a prominent element of the Abisko National Park, an area renowned for its pristine natural environment and scientific research, particularly in the fields of ecology and climate change. The region experiences a subarctic climate, and the lake is typically ice-covered from December through June. The lake's basin was formed by glacial erosion, and it is part of the Torne River watershed. The surrounding landscape is characterized by mountains, birch forests, and alpine tundra, providing a habitat for a variety of Arctic flora and fauna. The area is a destination for outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing, and, during the winter months, cross-country skiing and dog sledding. Due to its location within the auroral zone, it is also a prime location for observing the Northern Lights. The lake is traversed by the European route E10 and the Malmbanan railway line, which connects the mining town of Kiruna with the Norwegian port of Narvik.
