Located in the remote village of Jukkasjärvi, Sweden, approximately 200 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle, the ICEHOTEL is a pioneering and ephemeral hotel constructed annually from snow and ice harvested from the adjacent Torne River. First established in 1989, it is recognized as the world's first and largest hotel built of ice. The hotel's existence is inherently seasonal, typically open from December to April, as it relies on sub-zero temperatures to maintain its structural integrity before melting back into the river each spring. Each iteration is entirely unique, featuring newly commissioned art and architecture. A global call for artists results in a fresh collection of ice sculptures, art suites, and design details crafted by selected ice artists and architects from around the world. Beyond its function as a hotel offering overnight stays in thermally insulated sleeping bags, the ICEHOTEL complex serves as a cultural hub. It offers guided tours, ice sculpting workshops, and houses an ice church that is a popular venue for ceremonies. The site also includes a permanent, year-round structure offering ice experiences regardless of the season.
