The Ferreira Borges Market (Mercado Ferreira Borges) is a remarkable example of late 19th-century architecture and a key cultural landmark in central Porto. Located near the Praça do Infante and the Palácio da Bolsa, it was built in 1885 and named after José Ferreira Borges, a jurist and political figure who played an important role in Portuguese history.
The market building is a wrought-iron structure typical of the industrial design of the period. Designed by João Carlos Machado, it features symmetry, large arched openings, ornamental details, and a glass roof that provides natural lighting. Although originally intended to function as a food market, the building was never fully used for that purpose.
Since the late 20th century, the structure has been repurposed as a multifunctional cultural venue. Today it houses the Hard Club, a venue for concerts, exhibitions, theatrical performances, and other cultural events. Through careful restoration and adaptive reuse, the Ferreira Borges Market has become a symbol of Porto’s ability to transform historical heritage into a vibrant part of its contemporary cultural life.
