The Ribeira Fountain (Chafariz da Ribeira) is one of Porto’s oldest and most historically significant fountains, located on the square of the same name in the heart of the Ribeira riverside district. Built in the 17th century, it once served as a public water source for residents and visitors to the city’s bustling riverfront, playing an essential role in daily urban life.
The fountain is embedded into a wall between narrow buildings and features a niche crowned with the coat of arms of Porto. Water flows from a mascaron — a stylized head — into a rectangular basin. Above the fountain is a Baroque-style balustrade and a staircase leading to the upper levels of the quay. Though modest in scale, the fountain is a striking feature of the urban landscape and an enduring symbol of the city's cultural memory.
In 1784, the fountain underwent official restoration by the municipality, reflecting its public significance. Though it no longer serves a utilitarian purpose, the Ribeira Fountain remains a valued architectural and historical element, seamlessly integrated into the Ribeira square ensemble. It offers a glimpse into Porto’s early water infrastructure and the life of its historic riverfront community.
