The Old Ceramics Factory of Senhor de Além (Antiga Fábrica de Cerâmica do Senhor de Além) is a significant piece of Porto’s industrial heritage, located on the southern bank of the Douro River in Vila Nova de Gaia. Founded in the 19th century, the factory played a vital role in the local ceramics industry, specializing in the production of construction materials, tiles, and decorative ceramic elements.
The factory complex is built in a traditional industrial style, using brick, stone, and iron structures. Its architecture reflects the early industrial era, balancing functionality with a sense of visual identity. One of its most iconic features is the tall brick chimney, which remains a landmark in the area’s urban landscape.
Though production ceased in the 20th century, the structure has been preserved and remains of interest for its architectural value and connection to the region’s labor history and urban development. In recent years, initiatives have been proposed to rehabilitate and repurpose the site as a cultural or public space, aiming to preserve the memory of the area's industrial past. The Old Factory of Senhor de Além stands as a testament to the relationship between industry and city, shaping the cultural identity of Vila Nova de Gaia.
