The Statue of Bishop D. António Barroso (Estátua de D. António Barroso) stands near the Church of Loretto (Igreja do Carmo) in Porto and honors one of Portugal’s most prominent religious and missionary figures of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. D. António Barroso (1854–1918) was a Catholic bishop and missionary known for his work in Africa and India, as well as for his unwavering faith, social commitment, and dedication to service.
The bronze sculpture portrays the bishop in traditional clerical attire, holding a cross and a Bible, symbolizing his spiritual authority and missionary devotion. His dignified and composed posture reflects the deep respect held for his legacy. The statue rests on a stone pedestal adorned with reliefs and an inscription bearing his name and life dates.
Erected through the joint efforts of ecclesiastical and civic institutions, the monument expresses public gratitude for his contribution to Portugal’s religious and humanitarian mission. Today, the statue of D. António Barroso serves as both a site of remembrance and a cultural landmark in Porto’s historic center, bridging spiritual heritage with the urban landscape.
