The Monastery of Serra do Pilar (Mosteiro da Serra do Pilar) is a remarkable architectural and historical landmark located on a hill overlooking the Douro River in Vila Nova de Gaia, directly across from Porto’s historic center. Built in the 17th century by the Order of Saint Augustine, the monastery combines elements of Mannerism and Renaissance styles and is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of Porto’s cultural landscape.
Its most distinctive feature is the circular church and cloister — an architectural rarity in Portugal. Dedicated to Saint Augustine, the church is characterized by strict geometric lines, a central dome, and a commanding location. From its terrace, visitors enjoy one of the most breathtaking panoramic views of Porto, the Dom Luís I Bridge, and the Douro River, making it a favorite spot for tourists and photographers.
Throughout history, the monastery also served military purposes, particularly during the 19th century siege of Porto, when it was used as a fortified position. Today, it is partly managed by the Portuguese military, while its church and viewing terraces remain open to the public. The Monastery of Serra do Pilar stands as a site of spiritual, cultural, and scenic importance, and an iconic part of the skyline shared by Porto and Gaia.
