Asinu Church in Troodos
Cyprus, Troodos

The church, registered in the UNESCO World Heritage List, is located in the foothills of the Troodos massif. It was founded in the XII century and is a tiny, modest temple, the size of a small cottage, but is considered one of the most beautiful churches in Cyprus, which is visited annually by many pilgrims. The walls of the church are painted with Byzantine frescoes of the XII-XVI centuries, telling about the resurrection of St. Lazarus from the dead. The central part illustrates the life of Christ from birth to resurrection. The apse, surrounded by two archangels, depicts the Virgin Mary, raising her hands to heaven and begging to give her a blessing (fresco of the XII century). But the most significant panel dating from the 14th century is in the narthex: on it, under the images of the Virgin Mary and her Son, Saint George is depicted on his horse.
