Jonas Mekas’ Draft
Lithuania, Vilnius

“Jonas Mekas’ Draft” (Jono Meko Skersvėjis) is a unique urban art installation in central Vilnius dedicated to the memory of Jonas Mekas — poet, philosopher, and one of the founding figures of American avant-garde cinema, often referred to as the "godfather" of independent film. Located in a narrow passageway between Malonioji and Vokiečių streets, this site-specific work functions as both a monument and a living expression of artistic perception.

The installation transforms the alley into a poetic space: metal structures, light, textual fragments, and the natural play of wind create the sensation of a “draft” — a metaphor for creative flow, freedom of movement, and inner search. The walls are adorned with quotes from Mekas in Lithuanian and English, reflecting his thoughts on memory, time, home, and solitude.

This is a place for informal reflection and quiet interaction between the city and the individual. Passing through becomes a cinematic moment — a fleeting encounter with poetry. “Jonas Mekas’ Draft” is not a conventional monument but a dynamic urban metaphor, one that shifts with the weather, with emotion, and with each person who walks through it.
