The citadel (medieval fortress) was built in the XII century at the foot of Mount Mukattam. The giant mosque with a domed roof and two thin minarets, towering over Cairo, was built in the Citadel in the middle of the last century and bears the name of Muhammad Ali - the then ruler of the country. Prior to its construction, the main mosque of the Citadel was the mosque of Sultan Nasir. One of the decorations of the mosque is the minarets. Their silvery peaks are lined with colored earthenware tiles. This is not found in any other mosque in the city. Immediately in the mosque is the tomb of Muhammad Ali himself. The Citadel is a unique visiting card of Cairo.
