Canary Islands, Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Teide National Park, the highest volcano in Spain and the islands of the Atlantic Ocean, is located on the territory of the Teide National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Spain. Its height is 3718 meters, the diameter of the crater is 16 km. An ancient legend of the indigenous inhabitants of the Guanche island says that the evil spirit of Guyot stole the goddess of the sun and light and hid it in the bowels of Mount Teide, plunging the world into darkness. The supreme god Achaman freed the goddess, and imprisoned the devil in grief. Since then, trying to free itself, Guyota shakes the mountain and provokes an eruption of the volcano. Teide is located in the center of Tenerife, its snow-capped peak is visible from anywhere in the island. Lava debris and huge boulders are scattered at the foot. About 150,000 years ago, during a major eruption, the Las Caniadas caldera formed, in the northern part of which is the Teide volcano. The Teide eruptions were recorded in 1704 and 1705, the eruption in 1706 destroyed the city and port of Garachiko, several adjacent villages. The last time a volcano woke up in 1909. Teide is considered an active volcano, and the island of Tenerife belongs to seismically dangerous areas. In 2003, seismologists recorded an increase in activity in the crater of the volcano. Near the mountain, about 170 plant species grow, many of which are found only in this area. You can climb to the top of the volcano on the funicular built in 1971. Climbing to a height of 3555 meters takes 10 minutes. Stop - 163 meters from the Teide crater, this distance is overcome on foot. Access to the peak of the volcano is limited and requires special permission at the Teide National Park office, descent into the crater is prohibited. From the top there is a breathtaking view of the island, peering through the clouds. The volcano is annually visited by more than 3 million tourists from around the world.
