- Giorgio Franchetti Ca d Oro Gallery
The Ca d Oro Palace, housed in the Giorgio Franchetti Gallery, was built on the banks of the Grand Canal in Venice from 1421 to 1428. The palace was built by order of the noble Venetian family Contarini. The splendor and beauty of the palace was to overshadow the existing palazzo of the city. The building was designed by the famous architect Giovanni Bon in his characteristic Venetian floral Gothic style. The main facade faces the Grand Canal and is one of Venice's most recognizable palazzos. To decorate the facade, openwork loggias with arches, gold leaf, cinnabar and ultramarine were used. Subsequent owners of the palace rebuilt the building several times. Under the ballerina Maria Taglioni, the courtyard, balconies and the Gothic staircase were destroyed. In 1894, the building was acquired by Baron Giorgio Franchetti, who did a lot to preserve the palazzo, the stairs and balconies were restored, and in 1922 he bequeathed the Ca d Oro palace to the city of Venice. In the palace was opened the Art Gallery of Giorgio Franchetti Ca d Oro. The gallery began with a collection of works of art compiled by Franchetti. The pride of the gallery is the painting by Saint Sebastian of the Italian artist Andrea Mantegna, the work of German and Flemish masters of the XV - XVI centuries, as well as paintings by Titian, Tintoretto, Carpaccio, Tiepolo, Giorgione. The gallery presents collections of ceramics, frescoes, medals, bronze ware and a unique marble mosaic of the palace, for the restoration of which Giorgio Franchetti spared neither energy nor resources.
