Piazza Del Duomo (Cathedral Square)
Italy, Milano

The central square of Milan, Piazza Del Duomo (Cathedral Square) is considered to be one of the most beautiful squares in the world. For more than seven centuries, the Piazza Del Duomo has been the religious, commercial and cultural center of Milan. The center became the center of city life in the Middle Ages. In 1330, according to the plan of Azzone Visconti, the ruler of Milan, around the two main churches of the city of that time - the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore and the Basilica of Santa Tecla, the Piazza del Arengo was to be built, which will become the main square of Milan. In 1387, the construction of the Duomo Cathedral begins. To expand the area in front of him, with the permission of Pope Pius II, the Baptistery of San Giovanni, the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore and Santa Tecla were demolished. In the second half of the 18th century, the Royal Palace was erected on the square according to the project of the architect Giuseppe Piermarini, at the same time a market square was built adjacent to the Piazza Del Duomo. In 1859, when the construction of the Duomo Cathedral was almost completed, the Milan authorities decided to create a large square in front of the Cathedral. A competition was announced for the best project of Cathedral Square, in which 176 architects took part. The City Council chose the project of Giuseppe Mengoni, according to which the buildings of the Vittorio Emanuele II Gallery with glass vaulted arcades, the Arc de Triomphe, two Palazzo dei Portici were to be built along the perimeter of the square of the square to smooth the overwhelming dominance of the huge Duomo Cathedral. The construction of the square lasted 12 years, sometimes due to lack of funding, the implementation of the project was in jeopardy. The tragic event is connected with the history of the square - its creator, architect Giuseppe Mengoni, died on it, having fallen from the scaffolding during the curation of the object. The area was being completed without deviating from the original project. In 1896, an equestrian monument to the first king of a united Italy, Vittorio Emmanuele II, was erected in the center of Piazza Del Duomo. Currently, the Piazza Del Duomo, with an area of 17,000 square meters, is a venue for cultural and sports events, concerts, rallies and just a resting place for citizens and guests of Milan.
