Dzhurdzhevich bridge on Tara
Montenegro, Zhabljak Municipality

Dzhurdzhevich’s bridge was designed by Miyat Troyanovich. Built between 1937 and 1940 in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. The chief engineer of the project is Isaac Russo.
Five arches. Full length 365 meters. The largest span is 116 meters. The height of the roadway of the bridge from the Tara River is 172 meters !!! At the time of completion, the largest concrete automobile arch bridge in Europe.
It got its name from the name of the owner of a farm located nearby, he was a very good person - kind, honest, fair ...
The bridge is not straight, but slightly arched in shape. The pedestrian path along its railing is so small that you have to walk along it right on the roadbed, jumping onto the sidewalk every time a motor vehicle approaches.
Two years after the opening of the bridge, war came to these parts. To stop the advance of the Nazis, the partisans had to destroy it, or rather, only one, the most important central span. The operation was led by one of the engineers who built the bridge, Lazar Yaukovich. The offensive of the Italian troops in this part of Montenegro was stopped. The invaders specifically searched for Lazarus, and when they found them, they shot him directly on the bridge. The monument to the engineer now also stands here, at the entrance to the bridge - this is a tribute to the man who heroically sacrificed his life for the freedom of Montenegro.
After the war, the bridge was restored quite quickly, in 1946, since it was blown up very skillfully and prudently. Even now, if you look closely, you can see the prominent, brighter part of the large span - this is just the result of repair work.
Today Dzhurdzhevich’s bridge over Tara is considered one of the most visited sights of Montenegro, having turned from a banal automobile bridge into an amazing viewing platform! The view from here opens up not just beautiful, but incredibly beautiful. Not a single photo is capable of conveying even a thousandth of this beauty - it is simply impossible to fit it into the camera lens.
A little tip for those who travel on their own. Take your time to leave this place immediately, on the high right bank of the Tara canyon and on the lower left, where the road goes directly along the river, there are magnificent, albeit not completely equipped, observation platforms with excellent views of the openwork bridge and the surrounding mountains.
