Cathedral of St. Stanislav (Vilnius)
Lithuania, Vilnius

The Cathedral Basilica of Saints Stanislav and Vladislav is the most important Catholic church in the whole country, a place of great Christian, folk and state celebrations. The cathedral received the status of basilica in 1922. The word basilica means royal. This is the highest category of temples, which is assigned by the Pope only to special churches. Prominent people of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania buried in the dungeons of the Cathedral: nobles, bishops, princes. In the royal mausoleum under the chapel of St. Casimir lies the Grand Duke of Lithuania and King of Poland Alexander. This is the only ruler of Poland and Lithuania buried in Vilnius. The grandson of Gediminas and the most powerful ruler of Lithuania Vytautas the Great with his wife Anna are buried in the dungeons of the Cathedral. Here also lie two queens, the wife of Sigismund Augustus: Elizabeth of Habsburg and Barbora Radvilaite, who is sometimes called the most beautiful woman of Europe of her time. The stone walls of the Cathedral sheltered the urn with the heart of King Vladislav Vaza. In the dungeons, the oldest masonry of sanctuaries of the 13th-15th centuries and the oldest Lithuanian fresco painted in the 16th century have been preserved.

Bell tower

Opposite the Cathedral stands the bell tower - the best preserved tower of the defensive wall of Vilnius castles. Its height is 57 meters. The bell tower acquired a modern look 200 years ago, after reconstruction. According to current assumptions, the quadrangular underground part of the tower was built in the XIII or XIV centuries. The round part with narrow windows, that is, loopholes came to us from the XIV-XVI centuries. Subsequently, the tower was adapted under the bell tower, it became taller, its upper part was built in, which is half baroque, half classic. Despite the mixture of different architectural styles, the tower looks graceful and harmonious.
In the XVII century, a clock appeared on the tower. Their peculiarity is the absence of a minute hand, and every 15 minutes they are notified of the sound of a bell. For many centuries, the watchmakers of the bell tower climbed 92 steps one by one to the very top and once a week started the clock mechanism.
A few years ago, at the bell tower, the watchmaker was replaced by automatic equipment.
