Vianden castle
Luxembourg, Vianden canton

Vianden Castle is located in the canton of Vianden, in the north-east of Luxembourg and is one of the largest and most beautiful feudal residences of the Romanesque and Gothic periods in Europe. The castle was built in the XI-XIV centuries on a cliff, at the foot of which the river Ur flows, on the foundations of the Roman fortress and the stone fortification of the Carolingian. Historical facts indicate that from 1091 to 1417 the counts of Vianden owned the castle. In 1417, after the death of the last offspring of the Vianden branch, the Grand Duke of Luxembourg from the Nassau clan as a suzerain takes the castle into his possession. Since that time, the castle loses its importance as a feudal residence. In 1692, the castle was damaged by an earthquake, and in 1820, during the reign of William I, King of the Netherlands and Grand Duke of Luxembourg, the castle was sold for 3200 florins for building materials. All lead and copper pipes, tiles, wooden panels, stone decorations, floor beams, doors and windows are removed from it. In 1890, the castle passed into the possession of the Grand Duke of Luxembourg Adolf, he initiated the restoration of Vianden Castle, which was interrupted by the First World War. Since 1977, the castle belongs to the state and by 1990 was completely restored. Initially, the entrance to the castle was located on the west side. The round tower of the 15th century adjoined it. Behind the first gate are several courtyards, separated by a second and third gate. In the central part of the castle there is a chapel, which was rebuilt several times, in the XI century a manor house was built next to it. By the XIII century, the castle was expanded and occupied the entire upper plateau. In the northwestern part of the plateau, a new front building with a large hall was built. The flat ceiling was replaced by a vault, another floor was built on it with a hall 7 meters high. In the attic there were living quarters. At the same time, the central tower was expanded, the premises were made livable and equipped with fireplaces. The old building was expanded and connected to the central tower. It was equipped with a kitchen and other utility rooms. The entrance was moved to the center of the north side of the castle. The new hall was connected to the chapel with another building in which the gatehouse is located. The hall was equipped with a Gothic vault with a series of supporting columns in the middle. A Byzantine gallery was built above this hall. Vianden Castle is one of the most visited attractions in Luxembourg and Europe. Every year it hosts the Medieval Festival, in the framework of which knightly tournaments are organized, jugglers, minstrels perform, and theater performances are played.
