Hagar Kim Temple
Malta, Qrendi

Hagar Kim Temple, among other megalithic temples of Malta, is one of the oldest temples on Earth. Built presumably in 3600 - 3200 BC. Hagar Kim is located 2 km from the village of Krandi, on top of a hill, which offers beautiful views of the Mediterranean Sea and the nearby islet of Fulfla. The temple is built of globigerin limestone, some megaliths reach a height of more than 5 meters and weigh about 20 tons. For millennia, limestone has been significantly affected by time and precipitation, in order to protect it from further destruction, a huge tent is stretched over the temple. The Hagar Kim complex consists of the main temple and three additional megalithic structures next to it. The entrance to the temple is built according to the Triliton type - two vertical megaliths, on top of which a third, horizontal stone is laid. Hagar Kim consists of a series of oval rooms, the so-called apses, in which there are figures of animals and idols carved from stone, sacrificial altars made using silicon and obsidian tools. Giant limestone slabs form a kind of figure that archaeologists compare with the statues of the Mother Goddess found in the temple. The first excavations at the temple location were carried out in 1839, during which an altar and seven stone statuettes were found, which were sent to the Valletta Museum. In 1885, excavations were continued, according to their results, a plan of the temple complex was compiled. Partial restoration work was carried out in 1910, and in 1949, archaeologists found 3 more figurines and parts of a huge stone statue. Figurine Venus of Malta - a female figure with exaggeratedly curvaceous forms, found in 1950 and is now stored in the National Museum of Archeology in Valletta. The megalithic temple of Hagar Kim is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
