Budatinsky Castle
Slovakia, Zhilina

In the second half of the XIII century, at the confluence of the Vaga and Kisuc rivers, in the north of the city of Zilina, the Budatinsky Castle was erected. The first owner of the castle was the “uncrowned king” of western and central Slovakia, the feudal lord Matush Chuck Trencin. The castle was built on a rocky hill, consisted of a round watchtower and buildings made of wood and clay. The castle was surrounded by a defensive wall and a moat. In 1487 - 1798, the castle was owned by a noble family of Sunogs, during which great changes took place in the castle. New walls and moats were built, the castle complex was significantly expanded, the castle building itself was rebuilt in the Renaissance style - an antique fireplace on the ground floor of the mansion has been preserved since then. In the late XVII - early XVIII centuries, the castle lost its military significance, the lower wall was demolished, the castle and chapel were rebuilt in the Baroque style, and the premises were made more suitable for comfortable living of a family of a noble nobleman. The last owners, until 1945, were representatives of the Gakovtsev clan. In 1849, a big fire broke out in the castle, from which the southern and western parts of the castle were badly damaged, and the interior decoration was almost destroyed. They were demolished, and upon restoration of the castle, the feudal image was returned to the building. Budatinsky park was founded in the XIX century in a landscape English style. Large glades border small groves. Massive poplars with a trunk diameter of about 500 centimeters and old lindens, which are 250 years old, are still growing in the park. Some trees in the park reach a height of 30 meters. The park is inhabited by 28 species of birds. Since 1956, the Budatinsky castle with the park became part of the Povazhsky museum. From 2007 to 2013, large-scale works were carried out in the castle to restore and reconstruct the exterior and interiors of buildings. On July 13, 2014, the castle tower was reopened to visitors. The museum presents expositions introducing the history of the castle, the city of Zilina, an art gallery and an exhibition of watches work.
