The orchid garden in Barbados was opened on December 5, 1998 by former Prime Minister, Member of Parliament of Barbados, Owen Arthur. On the territory of the garden, located in the central part of the island, there was previously a poultry farm. In 1997, this land was bought by the joint-stock company Foster Ince Cruise Services, which planned to turn this place into one of the main tourist attractions of the island. Richard Colen, a well-known gardener and landscape painter on the island, was invited to work in the Orchid Garden. The landscape and garden design were developed. And a year later, a house was opened here for more than 30,000 orchids, which are an elegant addition to many other tropical plants, such as: Bougainvillea, Heliconia, palm trees, ferns, cacti, succulents. The location of orchids at different levels accurately reflects their natural habitat, and an artificial irrigation system, consisting of fountains and streams, takes visitors to the tropical jungle. The irrigation system is recirculating. The source of irrigation is a 30,000 liter aquarium that collects rainwater from the roof of the main building. In addition, this water is used for watering orchids. In the Orchid Garden, guests are invited to visit the gazebo, which has a beautiful panoramic view of the reed valley bordering the garden. The view is especially beautiful in November and December, during the period of reed ripening, when the whole valley resembles the silver sea from sugar cane. The main purpose of the gazebo is rest and relaxation. However, the territory of the gazebo can be used for weddings, birthdays, anniversary celebrations, book presentations, Christmas dinners, seminars, tea parties and other interesting events. The entire garden is a barrier-free zone for comfortable movement for people with disabilities. The benches are arranged so that any guest can relax and enjoy the singing of tropical birds living in the garden. You can visit the Orchid Garden both as part of tour groups and individually. On rainy days, umbrellas are offered here. There is also a flower shop in the garden.
