The Mariana Column is located in the historical center of Banska Bystrica, on the Square of the Slovak Uprising, next to the Clock Tower. The column was installed in 1719, in gratitude to the Virgin Mary for saving the city from the plague, which claimed the lives of more than half of the population of Banska Bystrica. All residents of the city raised funds for the construction of the monument, the initiator of the construction of the column was the pastor of the German church, father Joseph Hastinger, the creator of the Mariana column is unknown. The height of the Marian column is 13.2 meters, its warping is made in the form of two hexagonal ledges and a triangular pedestal, a statue of the Virgin Mary crowns the column with a height of 245 centimeters. At the end of the XIX century, the Marian column was reconstructed, its upper part and the statue of the Virgin Mary were restored in the classical style, unfortunately, the name of the sculptor - restorer, like his predecessor, remains unknown. In 1964, the column was moved to the embankment of the Gron River, the monument returned to its historic place only in 1994, after the restoration of the area of the Slovak Uprising. The Mariana Column is on the list of attractions that create the unique look of the old town of Banska Bistrica, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
