Koluvere Castle is a historic fortress located in Lääne County, Estonia. The first written record of a stronghold on this strategically important site dates back to the 13th century. Initially, it was a wooden fortification belonging to the local diocese. In the 13th and 14th centuries, the castle was significantly expanded and rebuilt in stone, becoming a powerful defensive structure typical of the Livonian Order. Throughout its history, Koluvere Castle has served various roles, including a fortress, a noble residence, and an administrative center. A notable chapter in its history is its use as a place of exile for the Russian Empress Catherine II's rival, Princess Augusta of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, who died and was initially buried there in 1788. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the castle was converted into a school and later served as a welfare institution. Today, the castle is a recognized cultural monument. It has undergone restoration works and is open to the public, hosting exhibitions, cultural events, and offering visitors a chance to explore its historic halls and learn about its rich and multifaceted past.
