The Abbey of Santa Maria da Vitória, which is a true masterpiece of late Gothic style with elements of a purely Portuguese Manueline style. The monastery was built by King Joao 1 in honor of the victory in the Battle of Aljubarotta in 1385. The building, made of golden limestone, amazes with its beauty and power. The monastery became a symbol of the greatness of the monarchy and the pantheon of the most famous dynasty of Portuguese kings, the Avish. The Founder's Chapel, with its impressive starry dome, houses the remains of King Joao 1 and his wife Philippa of Lancaster, as well as the burial places of their children, including the famous Prince Henry the Navigator. The monastery in Batalha Santa Maria da Vitoria is recognized by UNESCO as a monument of world significance.
