Inkerman St. Clement Cave Monastery
Republic of Crimea, Inkerman

The St. Clement Cave Monastery, the oldest architectural monument, is located in the suburbs of Sevastopol Inkerman. The cave monastery arose in the VIII - XI centuries. under the protection of the formidable fortress Kalamit. The rock on which the fortress of Kalamita is located is dotted with a mass of passages and caves. In one of these caves, during the Middle Ages, the Orthodox monastery of St. Clement was erected. The foundation of the monastery is associated with the name of St. Clement - the Roman bishop from 92 to 101. Clement in Caesarea was baptized by the Apostle Peter, and then continued to travel with him, sharing all the dangers and difficulties for preaching the Christian faith, was exiled by Emperor Trajan to a quarry near Chersonesos and executed here in 101. High above the road, on the plateau of the Monastery Rock, the remains of the ancient structures of the Kalamita fortress are clearly visible, and at the bottom of the rock are the remains of a Christian cave monastery. The most remarkable in it are three ancient cave temples, carved into the monolithic body of the rock. In the upper semicircle of the rocky apse of the third temple, a large stone cross is carved, from which plant shoots seem to grow. At quite a considerable height in the rock, balconies with canopies crowned with crosses can be seen. The caves served as the first monks and housing and utility rooms. Temples were also set up in caves, and an altar, a throne, and benches were cut out of stone. All rooms were connected by staircases carved into the rock. After the capture of the fortress by the Turks in 1475, the monastery gradually fell into decay.
The revival of the Inkerman St. Clement Monastery began in 1991 thanks to Archimandrite Augustine with his help the relics of the holy martyr Clement returned to the monastery. Today the monastery has become operational and is visited by many pilgrims and tourists, and in the picturesque surroundings of the monastery you can take an unforgettable walk.
