Century Hall
Poland, Wroclaw

A grandiose architectural structure, a sports and entertainment complex, the Centennial Hall, listed in 2006 by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, is located in the city of Wroclaw, on the territory of the Schitnitsky Park. On the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Peoples near Leipzig in 1813, during which Napoleon’s army was defeated, the city authorities of Wroclaw (Breslau) decided to hold the Centennial Exhibition. For this, the city allocated territory on the outskirts of the Szczytnice Park, near the Wroclaw Zoological Garden. In the announced competition for the design of the exhibition building, architect Max Berg won. His project was quite bold and expensive, the estimated cost of the complex was 1.9 million marks. The official decision to build the Centennial Hall was made on June 28, 1911. The dome of the structure is 65 meters wide and 42 meters high. The useful internal area of the Centennial Hall is 14,000 square meters. In addition to the central hall, the building has 56 additional exhibition rooms and spacious halls that can accommodate 10,000 visitors, including 6,000 people in the central hall. The Centennial Hall was harmoniously integrated into the exhibition complex designed by the architect Hans Pölzig, which includes the Pavilion of four domes, Pergola - a gazebo entwined with plants, the Japanese Garden, a multimedia fountain - the largest fountain in Poland, and a zoo. The construction of the Centennial Hall was completed in December 1912, its grand opening was marked by the display of a play by Gerhard Hauptmann. In 1948, a 106-meter spire was installed on the square in front of the entrance to the Centennial Hall. During the 1997 reconstruction, mobile stands and an arena were installed in the central hall, which makes it possible to adapt the room for sports, entertainment or exhibition events. The Centennial Hall hosts major international exhibitions, hosts music festivals, concerts and theater performances, sports competitions and religious congresses.
