Sea Ban Don (4000 Islands)
Laos, Champasak province

Si Pan Don (4000 Islands) is a river archipelago of many small islands, located in southern Laos, near the border with Cambodia, in the province of Tampasak, on the Mekong River. Incredibly beautiful landscapes, the authenticity of the lifestyle of local residents and the "spirit" of French Indochina attract more and more tourists to the islands of Si Pan Don. The largest and most visited islands of the archipelago are Don Hong, Don Det and Don Hon. The size of the largest island of Don Hong is 18 km long and 8 km wide, it has several hotels, a market, and there is a bike rental service. In the eastern part of the island is the temple of Wat Chom Thong, built in 1805-1828, on the southwest coast - the temple of Wat Phou Khao Kaew. Don Hon Island is famous for its waterfalls, the most famous are Khone Phapheng Falls (the largest in Southeast Asia), called Laos Niagara Falls, and Somphamit Falls (Li Phi Falls). Along the shores of Don Hon Island, you can see freshwater Irrawaddy dolphins that live in the waters of the Mekong. Don Hon is connected by a pedestrian bridge to the neighboring island of Don Det, which has a large selection of inexpensive bungalows built right on the riverbank. The main tourist attraction of these islands are the remains of the narrow gauge Don Det Don Don Hon. The 7-kilometer railway was built by the French colonial authorities bypassing the Khone Phapheng Falls waterfall to transport goods and passengers from the Mekong River to the islands and in the opposite direction. Those who wish to take a walk along the river can rent a boat and go on an exciting journey between the islands, visit fishing villages, see how rice fields are cultivated and meet friendly locals.
