Nytorv (new square) is separated from Gammeltorv (old square) by the main shopping street Strøget. It was founded in 1606 and, therefore, is "new" only in comparison with the other half of the area. It was here that an old pillar and an iron pillar were installed for the public punishment of criminals. Both squares were completely destroyed by a strong fire that destroyed most of Copenhagen's center in 1795. The Court building in the classical style was erected on the square, and high on the wall of the Danish Bank you will find a memorial plaque in honor of the Danish poet and philosopher Soren Kierkegaard - in this place once stood the now defunct building where his apartment was located.
