Caritas Fountain (Caritasbrønden)
Denmark, Copenhagen

The Caritas Well (dates Caritasbrønden), also known as the Caritas Fountain (dates Caritasspringvandet), is the oldest fountain in Copenhagen, Denmark. It was built in 1608 by Christian IV and is located on Hammeltorv, is currently part of the Stroget pedestrian zone.

He is known for his golden apples, "jumping" on streams of water on the Queen's birthday.

Initially, a group of figures was carved from wood by the German woodcarver Statius Otto in Elsinore, and then cast in bronze. The figures depict the greatest of the three theological virtues - love or mercy (caritas in Latin), which is symbolized by a pregnant mother with her children. The figures stand on a column in a copper bowl. A copper bowl rises above the lower bowl on a stone pillar. A female figure pours water from her chest, while a little boy pisses in the pool. From 1857 to 1940, these water holes were closed out of respect for the mores of that time.

The modern Caritas Fountain is the result of the relocation and modernization of the old fountain built by Frederick II. He envisaged the construction of a six-kilometer water pipe from Lake Emdrup north of the city to Hammeltorv. The difference in height is 9 meters, the water pressure was sufficient to build a fountain. Despite the decorative nature, the fountain was also part of the urban water supply system.

On the monarch's birthday (currently April 16 for Queen Margrethe II), copper balls coated with 24-karat gold, symbolizing golden apples, are placed in the fountain for balancing on the jets. The tradition dates back to the 18th century.
