Musée du quai Branly - Jacques Chirac
France, Paris

The Musée du quai Branly - Jacques Chirac is a prominent museum in Paris dedicated to the indigenous art and cultures of Africa, Asia, Oceania, and the Americas. It was inaugurated in 2006 under the initiative of former French President Jacques Chirac, for whom it was renamed in 2016. The museum's mission is to recognize the immense artistic and cultural heritage of non-European civilizations, which were historically underrepresented in major Western institutions.

The museum's collection is vast, housing approximately 450,000 objects, of which around 3,500 are on permanent display. These works span from ancient archaeological artifacts to contemporary creations, encompassing sculptures, textiles, masks, musical instruments, and ceremonial objects. The collection is primarily derived from the former collections of the Musée de l'Homme and the Musée national des Arts d'Afrique et d'Océanie.

The institution is housed in a distinctive building designed by the renowned architect Jean Nouvel. The architectural concept emphasizes a dialogue with nature, featuring a sprawling vertical garden on the exterior facade designed by botanist Patrick Blanc. The interior exhibition spaces are deliberately designed to create an immersive and contemplative environment for the artworks, away from a traditional chronological or geographic narrative.

Beyond its permanent galleries, the museum hosts a dynamic program of temporary exhibitions, performances, concerts, lectures, and screenings. It also functions as a leading research center in anthropology and art history, with a specialized university, a library, and conservation laboratories on site. This academic dimension underscores its role not just as a museum but as a living institution dedicated to study and dialogue.

The museum's location near the Eiffel Tower on the Left Bank of the Seine places it at the heart of Paris's cultural landscape. Its establishment marked a significant shift in French museology, aiming to present non-Western art primarily through an aesthetic and cultural lens, while also engaging with the complex histories of collection and colonialism. It serves as a major international reference point for the appreciation and understanding of world cultures.
