The Church of San Lorenzo is a significant religious and historical edifice located in Turin's central Piazza Castello. The church is a masterpiece of Baroque architecture, designed by the renowned architect Guarino Guarini. Its construction was completed between 1668 and 1680. The architectural design is celebrated for its complex and innovative geometric structure, particularly the magnificent dome, which is an engineering marvel creating an illusion of celestial ascent through its intricate interplay of arches and light. The church was dedicated to Saint Lawrence, a Christian martyr of the 3rd century. It stands on a site previously occupied by earlier churches dedicated to the same saint, with historical records indicating religious structures here as early as the 6th century. The interior is characterized by its rich marble revetments and elaborate decorative arts typical of the Baroque period, housing several important chapels and altars.
