Onon-Balj National Park
Mongolia, Khentii

Onon-Balj National Park is a protected area situated in the Khentii and Dornod provinces of eastern Mongolia. It was established to preserve the unique ecosystems of the region, particularly the confluence of the Onon and Balj rivers. The park encompasses a significant portion of the Mongolian Daurian steppe ecoregion, characterized by its vast grasslands, forest steppes, and riparian corridors. This area is of immense ecological importance, providing a habitat for numerous species of flora and fauna, including several that are endangered or rare. The park plays a crucial role in the conservation of the Mongolian gazelle and serves as a vital area for migratory birds. The Onon River, one of the major waterways in the park, is historically significant as it is considered one of the possible birthplaces of Genghis Khan. The landscape is defined by its rolling steppes, river valleys, and patches of birch and larch forests, creating a diverse and scenic environment. The park's management focuses on biodiversity conservation, sustainable tourism, and the protection of its watersheds, which are essential for maintaining the regional hydrological balance.
