Tobago Main Ridge Forest Reserve
Trinidad and Tobago, Tobago

The Tobago Main Ridge Forest Reserve is a protected area encompassing the central spine of the island of Tobago. It is recognized as the oldest legally protected forest reserve in the Western Hemisphere, established by an ordinance for the preservation of the island's climate and water supply in 1776.

The reserve covers approximately 3,958 hectares of tropical rainforest, characterized by rugged terrain, deep valleys, and a high biodiversity. Its elevation ranges from near sea level to over 550 meters at its highest point, influencing localized weather patterns and contributing to the island's rainfall.

Ecologically, the forest is a vital habitat for numerous endemic and migratory species. It is particularly renowned as a significant birding area, being home to species such as the white-tailed sabrewing hummingbird, the blue-backed manakin, and the collared trogon. The reserve also supports populations of the ocelot, the red-rumped agouti, and various species of bats, reptiles, and amphibians.

The forest plays a crucial hydrological role, acting as a watershed that captures moisture from the northeast trade winds. This function ensures the supply of fresh water to the island's communities and agricultural lands, fulfilling the original intent of its historic preservation.

Access to the reserve is provided through a network of trails, including the popular Gilpin Trace, which allows for guided exploration of the rainforest interior. These trails offer opportunities for birdwatching, hiking, and experiencing the pristine ecosystem. The area is managed with a focus on conservation, scientific research, and sustainable tourism.

The cultural and historical significance of the Main Ridge is profound, representing an early landmark in global environmental conservation law. Its continued protection is essential for maintaining Tobago's ecological balance, natural heritage, and the environmental services upon which the island depends.
