Robben Island
RSA, Capetown

Robben Island is 12 km from Cape Town. This small island (length - 5.4 km, width - 2.5 km) served as a prison for almost 400 years. During the colonization of South Africa, Aboriginal people who actively opposed the seizure of their territories were exiled here. During apartheid, Nelson Mandela served his sentence in this prison.
The island was not chosen for prison by chance. Cold, high humidity, badlands, lack of drinking water and trees - all this created the most difficult conditions for prisoners. The waters surrounding the island were patrolled by hungry sharks.
A colony of penguins, turtles, poisonous snakes and 74 species of birds live on the island. There are many whales and sharks in coastal waters.
