Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden
Canada, British Columbia

The Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden in Vancouver is the first of its kind, a full-scale classical Chinese garden built outside of China. It was constructed for the Expo 86 world fair and opened to the public in 1986. The garden was built by 52 master craftsmen from Suzhou, a city in China renowned for its classical gardens, using traditional tools and techniques. Materials, including roof tiles, lattice windows, and limestone rocks, were imported from China to ensure authenticity. The garden exemplifies the style of a Ming Dynasty (1368–1644) scholar's garden, designed as a place for reflection, intellectual pursuit, and harmony with nature. It is a "garden within a building," where covered walkways, pavilions, and corridors connect a series of courtyards and a central pond. The design philosophy is based on the Taoist principle of Yin and Yang and the balance of opposing elements. Water represents Yin, while the architecture and rocks represent Yang. The garden features a collection of Taihu rocks, prized for their intricate, water-eroded forms. It operates as a non-profit organization and functions as a cultural hub, offering public tours, educational programs, and cultural events such as music performances, art exhibitions, and festivals to promote understanding of Chinese arts and culture. The garden is named in honor of Dr. Sun Yat-Sen, a pivotal figure in modern Chinese history, who visited Vancouver during fundraising tours for the 1911 revolution that ended imperial rule in China.
