Holy Trinity Cathedral or Trinity Wall Street - probably the most famous church in New York. Located at the crossroads of Wall Street and Broadway, this building has long been the tallest in Manhattan. The temple is part of the New York Diocese of the United States Episcopal Church. The first church on this site was erected in 1698 and was a rather simple rectangular structure with an attic roof and a small porch. It is curious that Captain Kidd took part in its construction - the famous pirate provided equipment for lifting stones. In 1776, the first building was completely destroyed by the Great New York Fire. New construction began in 1788, and in 1790 the consecration of the newly rebuilt temple took place. The second building stood for about fifty years and was demolished in 1839 after the structure was significantly weakened due to several heavy snowfalls. The modern neo-Gothic church building with an eighty-five-meter spire was completed by 1846 according to the design of Richard Upjon. The bronze-cast church gate was designed by Richard Morris Hunt. They date back to 1893 and became a gift from William Waldorf Astor, the first Viscount Astor, in memory of John Jacob Astor III. The north and east doors consist of six panels of biblical stories, and the south door represents the story of New York.
In addition to regular services, a variety of concerts are constantly held in the Trinity Cathedral, from Bach cantatas to jazz performed by famous saxophonists. There is a museum in the temple where you can learn a lot of interesting things about the history of the church, including how the pirates helped build the first building, what the parishioners were like, how they restored the building after a fire. September 11, 2001, when the first tower collapsed, people tried to hide inside the church from the debris and clouds of dust that destroyed the huge plane tree, which for almost a century stood in the church cemetery. Sculptor Steve Tobin used the roots of the tree to create a bronze sculpture, which is installed to the left of the entrance to the Trinity Church. Special attention deserves a small cemetery inside the church fence, where one of the founding fathers of the United States, Alexander Hamilton, and the creator of one of the world's first steamboats, Robert Fulton, are buried.
