Beška Monastery
Montenegro, Virpazar

The Beška Monastery is a Serbian Orthodox monastic complex situated on the island of Beška on Skadar Lake. It was founded in the late 14th or early 15th century. The monastery complex consists of two churches dedicated to Saint George and the Holy Mother of God. The Church of Saint George, the larger of the two, was built around 1400 by Đurađ II Balšić and his daughter Jelena. It serves as the mausoleum of its founders, with their sarcophagi housed within. The Church of the Holy Mother of God is a smaller church built by Jelena Balšić around 1439-1440. The monastery was an important spiritual and cultural center, known for its scriptorium where significant religious manuscripts were copied. The complex suffered damage and periods of abandonment over the centuries but has been the subject of conservation and restoration efforts to preserve its historical and architectural heritage.
