Seaside Boulevard
Republic of Crimea, Sevastopol

In the heart of Sevastopol, next to Nakhimov Square, Primorsky Boulevard is located. This is one of the most beloved places not only of Sevastopol, but also guests of the city. Beautiful views of the raid and the famous Sevastopol Bay, fountains, flower beds, picturesque alleys and cozy corners of the rest attract visitors here. But Primorsky Boulevard is also the historical memory of the city, reflecting the events that have taken place in Sevastopol since its foundation.
In the 18th century, an earthen battery was built here, which was called Nikolaev. In the mid-19th century, the largest - a three-tiered casemated ravelin was built in its place, which was unparalleled in all Russian coastal fortresses. During the Crimean War, before leaving the south side of the city, the defenders blew up the battery. For many years after the Crimean War, impassable ruins that were notorious were piled up here. In April 1883, the city council appealed to the government to transfer a portion of the former battery for the construction of the boulevard.
The construction of the boulevard cost about 45 thousand rubles and cost a lot of effort to the city and builders - the ruins of the battery were dismantled, limestone rock was blown up in many places, pits for trees were broken, flower beds were planted, trees, laurel, olive, chestnut, plane tree, thuja were planted and cypress trees. The boulevard was decorated with terraces overlooking the sea and the north side. The new boulevard was called Seaside. It was a wonderful vacation spot that attracted Sevastopol residents. But not all citizens could enjoy walks along the boulevard, at the entrance there was a sign "Sailors and dogs are not allowed." In the 90s of the last century, a theater was built on Primorsky Boulevard. At different times, famous stage masters M.S. Schepkin performed here. F.I. Chaliapin, V. F. Komissarzhevskaya and others. A symphony orchestra played daily on the stage of Primorsky Boulevard in the season from May 1 to October 15. At the end of the XIX beginning of the XX century, F. Schubert symphonies and M.I. Chernyakhovsky suite sounded in a shell on the boulevard, a string orchestra conducted by V.K. Wilde played, the soloists of the port choir of musicians of the Black Sea Fleet sang. In May 1901, from May 14, the orchestra of the Life Guards Preobrazhensky Regiment played on the boulevard. In 1900, the Moscow Art Theater was on tour, which showed Chekhov's plays The Seagull and Uncle Vanya. The Sevastopol audience warmly received performances by their author, Anton Pavlovich Chekhov, who had specially arrived from Yalta. The theater building has not been preserved to this day.
Almost simultaneously with the theater on Primorsky Boulevard, the building of a marine biological station with an aquarium was built - the first scientific institution in Russia to study the flora and fauna of the sea.
On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the defense of Sevastopol 1854-1855 a monument to the scuttled ships appeared on Primorsky. On the embankment of the boulevard marked the place where the floating bridge began, on which the defenders of Sevastopol on the night of August 27-28, 1855 crossed to the North side.
On the stones of the granite embankment of Primorsky Boulevard left a trace of the events of the uprising of sailors in 1905. A memorial plaque is installed here, reminiscent of the rebel cruiser Ochakov.
And as a symbol of the everlasting heroic traditions of the Black Sea sailors on the 35th anniversary of the liberation of Sevastopol from Nazi invaders on the embankment of Primorsky Boulevard, a commemorative sign of the Black Sea Fleet squadron was inaugurated.
The boulevard, which is more than a hundred years old, has more than once been reconstructed and expanded. In 1949, its length increased, a beautiful cast-iron fence appeared, two entrances of a memorable architecture, the green outfit of the boulevard became richer and more diverse.
