Graf Marina
Republic of Crimea, Sevastopol

In any port city, the main attribute of the coast is the marina. Sevastopol was no exception. The arrival of the Russian fleet in the Sevastopol Bay very soon dramatically changed the position of a simple fishing pier, which appeared in the heart of the new city. With the start of construction, not far from the house of Rear Admiral Thomas Fomich Mekenzi, the head of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, in 1783, its shores were ennobled with ashlar.
By order of the viceroy of the Tauride province, His Grace Prince Grigory Aleksandrovich Potemkin, the renewed “front” marina of the city became Catherine’s. The wooden flooring was replaced with stone slabs, and it was from here that Catherine admired the Black Sea Squadron, demonstrating the numerous power of the sea power of Russia. True, the name didn’t take root and very soon the pier began to be called Grafskaya, in honor of the noble title of the successor to Mekenzi as commander of the Russian fleet in the Black Sea, Marko Ivanovich Voinovich, whose boat sailed here and moored during the squadron’s reviews.
Already in 1834, Mikhail Petrovich Lazarev seriously took up the matter of equipping the city’s worthy grand sea gates - so three years later the project of the English engineer John Upton was born. The very marina, in its modern form, was built only seven years later. The magnificent colonnade, the side terraces, the marble statues of the ancient gods, the marble guards of the Count's Quay - the lions of the Carrara master Ferdinando Pellicchio's lion, became a real decoration of the city.
Years and wars did not spare Count's Quay, but each time it was restored, and today, like many years ago, it is one of the favorite places of Sevastopol residents and guests of the city.
