Cathedral in the name of St. Simeon the Stylite

Cathedral in the name of St. prp Simeon the Pillar is the main temple of the city. At the beginning of the XIX century in Brest-Litovsk there was the only Orthodox church of the St. Simeon Monastery. On November 8, 1815, the monastery was engulfed in flames, which, in addition to various outbuildings, destroyed the wooden church. The construction of the stone temple was not begun until 1862.
On November 7, 1865, the relics of the procession from the fortress to the new church transferred the relics of St. Martyr Athanasius, and the next day it was lit. In 1894, a magnificent canopy with the image of a saint was erected over a cancer with relics. In the temple there was a list of the miraculous icon of the Mother of God “Kholmskaya”, an ancient icon of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. In addition, the temple was a gift guardian, Emperor Alexander III. During the First World War, the relics of the venerable martyr Athanasius were transported to Moscow. After the revolution, the surviving particles of relics were taken abroad. Only in the mid-90s. XX century a small part of the surviving relics was returned back to Brest. In the right corner of the temple, where the relics rested until 1915, now there is a restored cancer and a particle of the relics of Athanasius of Brest. A monument to this saint was erected near the cathedral in 2005. Currently, the temple also contains particles of the relics of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, Rev. Sergius of Radonezh, Rev. Euphrosyne of Polotsk, Saint Innocent of Radonezh and others. A Sunday school and an Orthodox library are organized at the church, a sisterhood in honor of Athanasius of Brest, martyrs Vera, Nadezhda, Lyubov and their mother Sofia. In 1997, in the Cathedral, Metropolitan of Minsk and Slutsk Filaret lit up a copy of the cross of St. Euphrosyne of Polotsk, made by Brest master N. Kuzmich.
