Church in honor of the Transfiguration in Zaslavl
Belarus, Zaslavl

The church in honor of the Transfiguration of the Lord (Transfiguration Church) was built in the 1570s by the dependency of Nikolai Glebovich on the territory of Zaslavsky castle as a Calvin cathedral. In Calvin Cathedral, Simon Budny himself read his sermons. Then Calvin Cathedral became the church of St. Michael the Archangel. This happened in the second half of the 17th century under the new masters Casimir Jan and Christine Barbara (from the Glebovich clan) Sapieha. Then they completed the 37-meter tower-belfry. The architectural solution of the tower with many elements of defense construction indicates the danger of the constant military threat in which Belarus lived at that time. The temple got the appearance of defensive and cult architecture of the Renaissance. In 1840, the church was given to the Orthodox and consecrated as the Transfiguration Church. In the same year, the temple was restored.
At the expense of the treasury, which donated 6,000 rubles, a new dome was erected in 1864-1865, the floor was replaced, the roof was covered with tin. In the spring of 1922, like most other churches, it was looted, and in 1935 it was closed. Only in 1990 the building was returned to believers. On October 20, 1996, a fire occurred in the temple (they say it was set on fire by representatives of the sect of the Satanists), but everything turned out well. After the repair, it was consecrated as an Orthodox church. Now the church is included in the historical and cultural reserve “Zaslag”. Tens of thousands of tourists visit it annually. Many of them in the walls of the shrine offer signs of the cross and ask God for help.
