Museum of the History of Belarusian Cinema

The Museum of the History of Belarusian Cinema is one of the youngest in Belarus, although it has an almost thirty-year history.
It was founded at the initiative of Belarusian cinematographers in Minsk in 1976 (on the eve of the 50th anniversary of the release of “Let’s Go Natsyanalnі Films” “Lesnaya Byl”) as a departmental film studio “Belarusfilm” for collecting and preserving materials about national cinema, popularizing its achievements. From 1982 to 1988, he was housed in the Republican House of Cinema (Church of Saints Simon and Alena) of the Union of Cinematographers of the BSSR, performing mainly an archival function. It was opened for regular visits in early 2002 in a specially reconstructed (1994-1998) three-story building, a monument of architecture of the first half of the 20th century (4 Sverdlova St.), by decision of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus. Since January 2005 - a branch of the institution “State Museum of the History of Theatrical and Musical Culture of the Republic of Belarus”. Main types of activity: collecting, systematization and description of documents and materials on the history of Belarusian cinema and film culture in general; organization of stock, thematic and personal exhibitions related to cinema, Belarusian fine arts in general; systematic screening of domestic and foreign film classics. Access to the museum’s stock vaults is restricted to specialists.
For visitors are open: on the 1st floor, a cinema hall with 50 seats and a video hall with 10 seats, where films, individually retrospectives and retro-programs based on museum cinema (video) are shown to groups and individually; on the 2nd floor there is an exposition hall (140 m2), where the permanent exhibition “The Golden Fund of Belarusian Cinema” is located, containing various information (about 800 exhibits) about our best films of all kinds and genres (including those that are listed by UNESCO as representative works of world cinema), guided tours are held; on the 3rd floor - an exhibition hall (100 m2), where a variety of personal themed art exhibitions are organized.
