Museum of Lithuanian Aviation
Lithuania, Kaunas

The Museum of Lithuanian Aviation was founded by a decree of the Ministry of Culture of Lithuania on February 19, 1990. The current museum was created on the basis of the Museum of Sports Aviation, which appeared on the initiative of Lithuanian aviators in 1971. The Museum of Lithuanian Aviation is located in the city of Kaunas, on the territory of the oldest airfield of Lithuania - the airfield named after Steponas Darius and Stasis Girenas, the legendary Lithuanian pilots who made a transatlantic non-stop flight from the USA to Kaunas in 1933. Since 1991, in the houses in which the pilots were born, branches of the museum were opened and memorial exhibits telling about the flight were organized. The museum's collection has about 20,000 exhibits. Large open airplanes, helicopters and fire fighting equipment are exhibited in an open space of 4,700 square meters. The exposition "Lithuanian Aviation from Its Birth to Today" presents photographs and documents telling about the history of aviation development in Lithuania. Among the exhibits are the propellers of the first Lithuanian military aircraft, aviation signs, a collection of aircraft engines, uniforms of pilots of different times, personal belongings of famous pilots and aircraft designers. The pride of the museum is the gliders built and operated in Lithuania, among which the famous collection of gliders of the Bronius Oskinis. The museum’s most popular exhibit is a flying copy of the legendary Lituanika aircraft, made by the famous Lithuanian aviator Vladas Kensgaila in 1982. Visitors can sit in the simulator of the An-2 aircraft and in the pilot's seat in the layout of the cockpit of the Mi-8 helicopter. In the museum’s conference hall, lectures, meetings with famous aviators are held, films on aviation topics are shown. The specialized library of the museum has about 19,000 publications on the aviation theme. A memorial of aviators was created near the museum, in which ceremonies are held dedicated to the historical dates and significant events of Lithuanian aviation.
