National Sahent Art Gallery
Poland, Warsaw

The Zahent National Art Gallery is one of the oldest art galleries in Poland. The gallery is located in the center of Warsaw, in a building built in the years 1898-1900 according to the project of the architect Stefan Schiller in the Renaissance style. Schiller became the winner of the third and fourth stages of the competition for the design of the exhibition building, announced in 1862 by the Society for the Promotion of Arts. The gallery’s official opening took place on December 15, 1900, in 1903 the south wing was opened, designed to house a permanent exhibition consisting of its own collection of works of art of the Society for the Promotion of Arts. During the Second World War, the building escaped serious damage; during the occupation, the Gallery housed the House of German Culture. Restoration work was carried out in 1945, in 1965 the building of the National Art Gallery of Zahent was entered in the register of monuments of Poland. Since the gallery was opened, the most famous Polish artists, including Wojciech Gerson, Jan Matejko, Jozef Helmonski, Jozef Brandt, Stanislav Vyspiansky, Jozef Megoffer and others, have been presenting their work here. Currently, Zahenta is the most prestigious and largest gallery of contemporary art in Poland, its permanent exhibition has more than 3600 objects, including about 700 paintings, 80 video works, 100 sculptures and installations, a large collection of drawings, photographs and printed works. The gallery hosts temporary solo and group exhibitions of Polish and foreign artists, an educational program is being prepared for each exhibition, which includes excursions, meetings at the exhibition, discussions, film screenings, and concerts. In the Documentation department, visitors can familiarize themselves with the history of the gallery and learn more about contemporary art. The gallery has created a rich collection of catalogs and archives of Polish post-war art. The archive includes information about more than 30,000 Polish artists - biographical notes, photographs, a list of exhibitions in which the artist participated, newspaper clippings and exhibition catalogs. The library contains books on art, catalogs of exhibitions organized in Poland and abroad, Polish and foreign art magazines. The gallery also hosts seminars, presentations, meetings with artists, film demonstrations, educational workshops and integration programs. The gallery has a bookstore where you can buy art books, photo albums, catalogs of exhibitions and museums, reproductions and collections of essays.
