Old Mormon State Historic Park Las Vegas
USA, Las Vegas

The Old Mormon State Historic Park is located in downtown Las Vegas and is the only U.S. state park in the city. In 1855, a Mormon missionary arriving from Utah in the Las Vegas Valley built a fort on the banks of a creek. The Mormons who founded it took up farming and raising livestock. Within the walls of the fort, gold miners, traders and travelers found refuge, a post office worked in it. The Old Mormon Fort in Las Vegas was the first settlement in the valley and the ancestor of the future of Las Vegas. In the Potosi Mountains, missionaries began to mine coal, but the constant raids of the Indians prevented the Mormons from gaining a foothold on this land for a long time. Despite the fact that in 1860-1865 the US government sent military units to protect the inhabitants of the fort, the missionaries left the valley. In 1865, Octavius Gass acquired the plot and abandoned buildings for the construction of a ranch with a forge and a shop. In 1881, Archibald and Helen Stewart became the owners of the ranch. In subsequent years, the ranch was resold several times, until in 1989 it was acquired by the city of Las Vegas. In 1991, the Old Fort Mormon State Historic Park in Las Vegas was founded on the grounds of the former fort. Visitors to the park have the opportunity to get acquainted with the history of Las Vegas, the way of life and lifestyle of the first settlers. Among the exhibits there are photographs, historical documents, household utensils, furniture and interior items. In 2005, a large-scale reconstruction of the old fort was carried out, places for picnics and recreation were equipped.
