Gunnison National Forest is located in the United States of America, in the western state of Colorado. The forest area is 6767 square kilometers, in the north it borders with the White River National Forest, in the west with the Ankompagre and Grand Mesa National Forests, in the south with the Rio Grande National Forest, in the east with the San Isabel National Forest. Gunnison Forest Reserve was established on June 13, 1905 by order of President Theodore Roosevelt. Initially, the reserve was called "Kochetop Forest Reserve", later the forest was named after Captain John Gunnison, who explored this area in 1853 in search of the most optimal route along the continental divide for the construction of the railway. The Gunnison National Forest has many lakes and reservoirs. Several forest sites have the status of "Wildlife Territory", which are under special state protection.
