Japanese Arrivals to Laos Jump 36 Percent Amid Renewed Tokyo Tourism Push

Laos experienced a significant 36% increase in Japanese tourist arrivals during the first half of 2026, welcoming a total of 23,133 visitors from Japan. This growth is part of a positive trend that has been building since 2022.

According to the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism, the number of Japanese visitors has been steadily rising each year, from approximately 6,800 in 2022 to nearly 25,000 in 2023, around 29,000 in 2024, and over 33,700 in 2025.

Manisakhone Thammavongxay, Director General of the Tourism Marketing and Promotion Department, attributes this surge to consistent promotional campaigns, active outreach by the Lao embassy, and the country's successful participation in World Expo 2025 in Osaka.

A notable highlight was the official visit of Princess Aiko of Japan to Laos in late November 2025. This five-day trip, her first overseas mission, took her to Vientiane and Luang Prabang and marked the 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two nations, significantly boosting Laos's profile among Japanese travelers.

Another key factor has been the annual Laos Festival held in Tokyo in May 2026, which continues to generate strong interest in Lao culture and tourism offerings.

To build on this momentum, the ministry signed a renewed agreement with a Japanese partner on 17 August. This collaboration will focus on promoting Laos as a prime destination to Japanese travel agencies, media outlets, and educational institutions, while also supporting content creation and the Laos Festival in Tokyo.

The growth from Japan is part of a larger tourism resurgence for Laos. The country welcomed nearly 2.6 million international tourists in the first half of 2026, a 9.9% increase compared to the same period last year. With over 4.58 million visitors in 2025, the government is aiming to attract between 5 and 6 million international arrivals by the end of 2026, with Thailand, China, and Vietnam leading in visitor numbers.
