Flooding Affects 34 Villages in Luang Namtha as Roads, Power Hit Across Northern Laos

Heavy rainfall has caused significant flooding in Luang Namtha Province, impacting 34 villages and disrupting road networks, power supply, and infrastructure, according to state media reports.

Torrential rains from 28 to 29 August caused rivers and streams to swell, leading to flash floods that inundated communities along several waterways, including areas in and around the Boten Special Economic Zone.

On the morning of 29 August, overflowing streams in Boten flooded roads before water entered homes and offices within the Boten Special Economic Zone, the Boten International Checkpoint, and nearby villages along the Nam Thung River.

Provincial officials report that agricultural land, gardens, homes, roads, offices, and schools have been affected. A thorough assessment of the number of affected people and households, as well as the extent of damage, is currently underway.

Authorities are mobilizing personnel and resources, including boats, vehicles, shelters, food, and medical supplies, to assist affected residents. Residents in vulnerable areas have been advised to follow official updates, avoid floodwaters, move belongings to higher ground, and be prepared to evacuate.

Road Closures

The Luang Namtha Provincial Department of Public Works and Transport has announced on 30 August that severe flooding and landslides have closed National Route 13 North, from the Oudomxay provincial border to the Boten-China border.

Heavy rain has damaged roads and bridges along this route. Repair work is being expedited, and drivers are urged to avoid the area, park safely, and cooperate with repair crews.

Power Outages in Oudomxay

In neighboring Oudomxay Province, severe flooding, landslides, erosion, and fallen trees from 29 to 30 August have damaged power infrastructure.

While some services have been restored, 74 villages and at least 3,817 households remain without electricity as blocked roads continue to hinder access.

A weather warning issued on 30 August indicates that northern and central Laos could experience continued heavy rain, flash floods, and landslides through 31 August. High-risk areas include Luang Namtha, Luang Prabang, Oudomxay, Bokeo, Bolikhamxay, and Khammouane, while moderate risks are predicted for Vientiane, Xaysomboun, Savannakhet, and Salavan. Authorities urge residents to monitor official updates and remain vigilant.

In Luang Prabang Province, flash flooding in Nam Bak District has impacted seven villages and 195 households. Cleanup operations and damage assessments have commenced.
