IATA Releases 2024 World Air Transport Statistics

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has released its 2024 World Air Transport Statistics report, highlighting key trends in global aviation.

The United States remains the world's largest aviation market, with 876 million passengers in 2024, primarily on domestic routes. India, despite being the most populous country, ranks fifth in air travel volume. China follows closely in second place with 741 million passengers and a significant year-on-year growth of 18.7%, compared to the U.S. growth rate of 5.2%.

The United Kingdom holds third place globally with 261 million passengers in 2024, reflecting its strong connectivity despite its relatively small size. Spain ranks fourth, with 241 million passengers, driven largely by tourism.

Nine of the world's ten busiest flight routes are located in the Asia-Pacific region. The busiest single route is the domestic flight between Jeju and Seoul in South Korea, with over 13 million passengers in 2024. The flight, lasting about 1 hour and 15 minutes, connects a popular tourist island with the capital city.

In North America, the most traveled route is between New York's JFK Airport and Los Angeles (LAX), serving 2.2 million passengers last year. In Europe, the top route is the one-hour flight between Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca, used by 2 million passengers in 2024, underscoring the region's strong appeal for vacation travel.
