Cluj Airport Removes Hand‑Luggage Liquid Limits

Avram Iancu International Airport in Cluj‑Napoca announced that, effective 3 September 2025, the traditional 100 ml restriction for liquids, gels and aerosols in cabin baggage will no longer apply. Passengers will be allowed to carry individual containers of up to 2 litres.

The change follows the introduction of new screening technology, installed in cooperation with the Romanian Intelligence Service’s anti‑terrorist unit (SRI) and the equipment supplier. According to the airport’s press release, the upgraded systems meet the European Commission’s security standards for detecting liquid explosives.

Alin Tise, President of the Cluj County Council, highlighted that the measure aims to improve passenger experience while maintaining high safety levels. “We want to offer travelers a smoother, more convenient journey without compromising security,” he said.

David Ciceo, Director General of the airport, added that the new limits will shorten processing times at security checkpoints. He also noted that the airport handled over 3.2 million passengers in 2024 and expects traffic to reach 3.4 million in 2025.

This decision makes Cluj the first Romanian airport to lift the 100 ml rule, aligning it with several European hubs that have adopted similar policies.
