The Government of Aruba has officially commenced restoration work on the Willem III Tower, one of the island's most iconic historical landmarks. The project aims to preserve the architectural integrity and cultural significance of this important site.
During the official announcement, Prime Minister Mike Eman underscored the historical importance of the location, noting that Fort Zoutman and the Willem III Tower together represent a cornerstone of Aruba's heritage. He explained that while many perceive them as a single structure, the fort was built first, with the tower added later as an integral part of the complex.
Fort Zoutman, the oldest building in Aruba, has played a key role in the island's history and governmental evolution. Over the years, it has served multiple functions, including customs, immigration, and parliamentary activities.
According to the government, the restoration will be carried out with great respect for the site's historical value. Original materials, authentic colors, and architectural details will be used to faithfully recreate its original appearance.
"Preserving heritage is not simply about renovating a building," Prime Minister Eman stated. "It is about keeping the history and identity of our people alive."
The restoration project will be implemented in several phases. Initial work will focus on the maintenance and restoration of the tower itself, followed by the surrounding walls and other structures within the historic complex.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to preserve Aruba's cultural and architectural heritage, with future projects planned for other historically significant buildings on the island.
The government also highlighted the key role of the Monumentenbureau Aruba, whose expertise is guiding the restoration to maintain the site's authenticity.
