IATA has launched a pilot of its Billing & Settlement Plan (BSP) in Somalia, paving the way for a full rollout expected by the end of May 2026.
The initiative supports the Somali government's goal of developing its aviation sector and expanding international connectivity. With a large diaspora and growing trade links across Africa and the Middle East, demand for air travel in Somalia has increased significantly.
Four travel agencies and several airlines serving the country, including Ethiopian Airlines, are participating in the pilot. This will allow the BSP to open to all airlines and over 300 travel agents operating in Somalia from May 2026.
Simplifying Financial Transactions
The BSP is a global system designed to streamline financial transactions between IATA-accredited passenger sales agents and airlines. It manages the sale of tickets and related payments between more than 400 airlines and tens of thousands of agents worldwide. Access to BSP provides airlines with cost-effective sales management, improved cash flow, and stronger financial controls in line with established standards and local regulations.
In 2025, the BSP processed over 700 million transactions across more than 180 countries, totaling USD 242 billion.

Despite years of challenges, the government has made commendable progress in rebuilding and modernizing its civil aviation system, including financial systems to support air transport growth. The launch of BSP will contribute to this effort," said Mohamed Farah Nuh, Somalia's Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation.
